The fishing flat overlooks the River Wye and fishing is just a short 5 minute walk down through the wood to the water’s edge.

The Cabalva stretch of the River Wye has never been open to day tickets and to this day maintains its exclusivity for guests staying on the Estate and for the Fishery Management team at Angling Escapades, who offer a guiding service on the whole fishery.

The fishing included with the Flat includes the prolific ‘Moby’ pool. Fondly named by previous generations due to the sheer size of salmon the pool would hold. The pool starts at a man made, stone Croy, directly in front of the flat, which has fast shallow water as the river passes over a ford. This area holds chub and barbel in the summer months, and is nice wading water. It also offers nice water for trout anglers whether Nymphing or Dry fly fishing.

As the River enters the wood, the pool drops deep into about 10 feet on summer level, and continues for about 80 yards. There are 3 accessible cleared swims here. The banks are steep but there are stepping points down to the waters edge, as well as permanent ropes to aid. The pool offers some good chub and barbel fishing, particularly in late summer/Autumn when the deeper water becomes the preferred water for barbel.

The pool fills up with dace throughout the summer, offering lots of bites for those wishing to trot, and get plenty of bites. There’s also a chance of a huge pike from Autumn onwards. In recent years, multiple 20lb fish have been caught as well as a 30lb monster. Although Wye salmon numbers are few, it is not unusual to find them holed up here with a chance of a fish in the late spring.

The fishing here is not ideal for those with mobility issues and we would advise travelling light, as this area is not trolley friendly.

If you want to explore the river more, both on the main river or the wonderful upland tributaries such as the famous River Irfon (near Builth Wells) there is lots of choice for both outstanding coarse and game fishing.
